Marlin Don Newman was born April 5th, 1962 to Glen and Nelcene Newman at his Grandma’s house in Sherwood, OK. He was welcomed to the world by one older brother, Eddie and two older sisters, Mitzi and Sue. Eventually, he would get two more little brothers, Craig and Elvan. The family of 8 made their home east of Campo, Colorado. From the time Marlin was born, he was an energetic, busy child who made his mother always wonder where he was and what he was up to. Nelcene often worried little Marlin would find his way into the cow tank. Somehow a German Shepherd named King managed to guide him away from the tank with the help of a banty rooster that got him down and was pecking him on the head until further assistance arrived. If Marlin got ahold of a screwdriver, you would likely find him underneath something taking it apart or putting it back together. And if you couldn’t find Marlin, a good place to start looking was on top of the house where he could be found running down the peak of the roof with one foot on each side of it.
As a teenager, Marlin would go to town and judging by the tracks he left in the field at the dead end road by the house he was attempting to make up some time on the way home. If it got too late, Glen would climb the 50-foot tv tower at the house and look for Marlin’s headlights.
Marlin met his future wife and love of his life, Tammy Ray in 1978 in Baca County. Tammy was visiting family at the time. Tammy lived in Paden, OK. Marlin took Tammy to both her junior and senior proms. Marlin graduated high school at Campo in 1981. Tammy and Marlin were married September 17, 1983, in Paden, OK in Tammy’s Grandpa’s House and her Grandpa Wayne officiated. Tammy and Marlin proceeded to live in Shawnee, Dale, and Choctaw, OK. Marlin worked for Oklahoma County, driving truck.
Tammy and Marlin welcomed their first child, Anthony Glen Newman on April 19, 1984, in Oklahoma City. Their second child, Trista Dawn Newman was born on September 28, 1985, in Midwest City, OK. In March 1986 Marlin moved his family to Baca County where he and Tammy have lived ever since. Tammy and Marlin’s third child, Eric Treal Newman was born March 8, 1988, in Johnson, KS.
Marlin spent his years farming, ranching, working for the county, and operating heavy equipment before getting a job with CIG/Kinder Morgan. He was a member of the Sheriff’s Posse, the Campo School Board, the Trustee Board and currently, sat on the Springfield Cemetery Board. He was also the Mayor of Campo for a period of time.
Marlin was well known as a man of large stature. And perhaps the only thing bigger than his huge hands was his giant heart. He loved his family more than anything in the world. He always put them first and wanted only the best for them. He showed us what it was to be a loving husband. He guided and taught his children so many things. It is hard to imagine a world without him and has certainly left a big hole in many people's’ hearts.
