Karen Lynne Jett was born to Alfred Thomas Meardon and Mildred Jean Black Meardon in Del Norte, Colorado on July 21, 1959. She was the oldest sister to brother Tom Meardon and sister Dena Christie. Karen passed away surrounded by family on July 31, 2023. She was 64 years old.
The Meardon family moved to Springfield, CO in 1970 when Karen was in the fifth grade. While in school, Karen enjoyed cheerleading, playing clarinet in the school band, and being a teacher’s aide. She also worked as a waitress at a local restaurant and was a teller at the local credit union.
Karen met her high school sweetheart, Steve Jett, and dated for a couple of years before marrying in June of 1977. They soon moved into the house on Barkley Avenue where they would eventually raise their family. They spent a beautiful 46 years of marriage there.
Steve and Karen enjoyed spending time boating with friends at Lake Powell and John Martin. It was not uncommon for Steve and Karen to be gone most weekends just enjoying their time with friends and each other.
As the three children came along, camping, boating, and RVing became common family outings. They frequented Taylor Lake and shared their love for the outdoors. For Karen, this love carried over into plants and gardening. She created a backyard sanctuary where people, insects, and wildlife alike loved to gather.
Karen also passed along her love for the holidays to her family. She always insisted on hosting the holiday meal and truly enjoyed cooking for her family and seeing everyone gathered together. She has passed on many family recipes that her children hope to give justice to.
Karen was a beloved member of the Springfield community. She began her career by keeping the books for several family businesses. She would tote around all three children in the process and became an expert multitasker. Karen eventually began her career at Springfield Schools where she would find her calling for education and dedicate nearly thirty years of her life. Karen truly was a life-long learner and an avid reader, so working in education was a natural fit for her. While at the school, she worked as a Title 1 Aide, a substitute teacher, and most recently the elementary school secretary. She was also the high school cheerleading sponsor for a few years and volunteered with multiple extracurricular activities like Knowledge Bowl and Odyssey of the Mind.
Karen loved being around students and helping them in any way she could. Past students would see Karen around town and still address her as “Mrs. Jett” because of the respect they had for her. We hope that Karen’s tenacity for learning is carried on through the students’ lives she touched.
Karen is survived by her husband, Steve Jett of Springfield, CO, her mom and dad, Alfred Thomas Meardon and Mildred Jean Black Meardon of Las Animas, CO, her two siblings, Tom Meardon of Las Animas, CO and Dena Christie of Lamar, CO, and her three children, Todd Jett, Page Johnson, and Abby Jett. The family invites you to join in the celebration of Karen’s life on August 7, 2023 10:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Springfield, CO.
