Joan Pearl Compton was born on November 28, 1936 in Carter Nine, Oklahoma to Jerel and Virginia Brooks, and passed away June 1, 2022, in Amarillo, Texas; she was 85 years old.
Joan attended kindergarten in Fairview, Oklahoma, then moved to Phillips 66 Plant between Guymon, Oklahoma and Gruver, Texas. She attended first and second grade in the Guymon Public Schools. She finished and graduated from Gruver High School in 1954. Joan attended Panhandle A&M College in Goodwell, Oklahoma where she met her husband, Donald Max Compton. They were married on Easter Sunday, April 21, 1957.
To this union three children were born, Terrie Lynn, Lorrie Ann, and Donald Max (Don).
Joan and Max lived in Telluride, Colorado for one year while Max taught school. They then moved to Springfield, Colorado where Max continued to teach school and work part-time at Bruce's Shamrock. In 1964 Joan and Max purchased one half of Shamrock; completing the purchase in 1976.
Joan began traveling to Goodwell to work on completing her teaching degree, then began working for BOECS teaching the mentally handicapped in Baca County and substitute teaching in the Springfield Schools. In 1980 Joan began taking CNA classes and working at the hospital. There she made a special friendship with Shirley Heguy. She also worked at Westphal Oil when needed.
After the kids were out of school for the summer the family would leave to go camping and fishing at the many locations in Colorado; going many times to Williams Creek by Pagosa Springs, Blue Mesa Reservoir, also traveling to Canada, Yellowstone, and Lake Powell. There were always extra kids and nieces and nephews traveling with them. Also, during the summer every weekend was spent at Two Buttes' Lake fishing, water skiing and swimming.
In her retirement years, Joan and Max traveled in their motor home and spent many winters in Zapata, Texas. She loved to travel and visited all 50 states.
Joan became a grandmother in 1982 with the birth of Sean Raymond.
In 2018 Joan moved to Amarillo, Texas to live with her daughter, Lorrie.
Joan is preceded in death by husband, Donald Max; parents, Jerel and Virginia Brooks; daughter-in-law, Karen Compton; granddaughter, Kamrey Compton; parents-in-law Raymond and Lucille Compton. Also, in-laws, Gary Compton, Theron Compton, Monte Compton, Jim Gann, Patricia Gann and Winona Derrick.
She is survived by children, Terrie Matthews (Keith); Lorrie Dorman (Gary); Don Compton (Joni). Grandchildren, Sean Clark (Audra); Dustin Dorman (Heidi); Garrett Dorman; Katelyn McGeary,(Damon); and Melissa Navarrette. Great-grandchildren, Mia, Morgen, and Zoe Clark; Caden, Presli and Hunter Dorman; and Avery McGeary. Sister, Glynda Holmes and Brother Jerel Brooks (Joan). Also many nieces and nephews.
She truly missed her beloved dachshund, Odie, who died this past winter.
