Jay Don Suhler, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and pillar of the Springfield community, passed away on September 18, 2026, at the age of 77. He was born on June 16, 1949, in Lamar, Colorado, to Carl and Ruth Suhler.
In 1969, Jay married the love of his life, Charlotte Fae Cardiff, and together they built a life full of purpose, laughter, and lasting memories. Their union brought two children into the world — Douglas Don and Misti Dawn — who were among his greatest joys and proudest accomplishments.
Jay grew up with deep roots in Baca County, where he spent the better part of his life farming and ranching — work he was proud of and knew well. In 1991, he transitioned to banking, where he put that same firsthand knowledge to work serving the very farmers and ranchers he had always called neighbors.
In his younger years, Jay was an all-state football player and a proud graduate of Springfield High School, Class of 1967 — a group of classmates he kept close to his heart and stayed in touch with throughout his life.
Jay's commitment to Springfield went far beyond his own livelihood. He stepped into public service as a town councilman, and then mayor — a role he held with dedication for 28 years. He also served as a board member and president of the Arkansas River Power Authority, earning multiple awards along the way. Those who knew him knew that none of it was ever about recognition. Jay simply believed in taking care of his community, and he showed up — quietly, consistently, and without fanfare.
When he wasn't serving his community, Jay could often be found behind the wheel of his RZR, exploring the backcountry with a big grin and a plan. He had a true passion for off-roading and took great joy in organizing trips for his friends — mapping out every trail, every stop, and every turn with the kind of care and enthusiasm that made every adventure something to remember. He was the self-appointed tour guide of every group he rode with, and nobody ever complained. Jay knew the maps like he knew his neighbors — by heart.
He was known for his honesty, his integrity, and his willingness to lend a hand to anyone who needed one. He didn't have to be asked twice.
Jay is survived by his wife, Fae Suhler; his son, Doug (Christy) Suhler; his daughter, Misti (Chris) Murray; and his grandchildren, Turner (Catherine) Suhler and Kyree Murray. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ruth Suhler and grandson, Alec Suhler.
A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, September 26 at 2:00 pm at the Methodist Church, 901 Colorado in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jay Suhler Memorial Fund at Frontier Bank to benefit healthcare in Springfield.
Jay Suhler left this world the same way he lived in it — having given more than he ever took. He will be deeply missed.
