Jack Quinton Smith, 88, of Springfield, Colorado, passed October 1, 2018, at Southeast Colorado Hospital after a brief illness.
Jack was born to Judeah Grover Smith and Mamie Virgil (Gordon) Smith, November 20, 1929, in Dodge City, Kansas. The family moved to Baca County when Jack was very young, where he resided until leaving for Army Service at the age of 17. He married Bettie Mae Schultz, of Glenwood Springs, Colorado August 1, 1950. Immediately following their marriage Jack was deployed to Korea where he served in the United States Army. While serving in Korea, Jack was severely wounded, and briefly was a POW. He was awarded several medals, including the Purple Heart for his service. Following his discharge, they lived throughout the Southwest, for Jack’s work, before settling in Waterloo, NE in 1955. In 1975 they moved to Springfield, Colorado. Together they raised seven children.
He leaves as his legacy seven children: Jacqueline Brown (Jim), Jerry, Glynda Pool (Darrell), Orlan, Norlin, Janice, Jillaine Ausmus (Danny). He also leaves to cherish his memory several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one sibling, Lavona Hoover, along with many nieces and nephews. His children remember him as a strong patriot, who enjoyed watching all sports, reading the newspaper daily, doing crosswords/word search, playing pool, winning at poker and playing solitary on his computer.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bettie in 1988, his parents, Robert J Smith (brother), and Dona Scarborough (sister).
Jack worked in construction as a carpenter and drywaller until he retired in 1991. He loved to travel, and frequently took road trips visiting family and friends all over the country until the age of 86! He particularly loved to visit his farm in Nebraska.
Graveside services are scheduled for October 6, 2018, 2 PM, at the Springfield Cemetery, in Springfield, Colorado. Pastor Kenny Bryan will officiate the ceremony. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Southeast Colorado Hospital, 373 E. 10th Ave., Springfield, CO, 81073. The family would also like to thank providers and staff at the SECHD clinic and hospital for the wonderful care they have provided for Jack over the past 4 years.
