Hazel Aileen Brown was born Sept 6, 1917 to Milow and Fern Flowers near Coldwater, Kansas. She had an older sister and two younger brothers. The family moved to a farm near Cimarron, Kansas where Hazel attended Junior High and High School. She went to Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas where she received a teaching permit. After teaching two years she married Edward Brown in Cimarron, Kansas. They lived near Montezuma, Kansas where Edward farmed.
Edward and Hazel had two daughters, Janice and Betty. In 1946 the family moved to a farm in northern Baca County. Hazel taught rural schools for three years before the family moved to Springfield where their daughters attended Junior High and High School. Hazel taught in Springfield Grade School for ten years. She also taught one year in Two Buttes Grade School.
Hazel was a 4-H leader for the Big Rock and Springfield 4-H club for 15 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years.
Hazel passed away February 4, 2021 at Southeast Colorado Hospital in Springfield, CO; she was 103 years old.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edward, daughter Janice, sister and brothers. She is survived by her daughter Betty, grand children Craig (Tanya) and Darla, great grand children, Keith and Bodie Brown.
