Gerald Wayne Lacy went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 28, 2019, with his sweetheart for 61 years, Verva Ann, singing at his side.
Wayne was born to Frank and Alice (Thompson) Lacy on December 15 th , 1935 in Hays, Kansas. He learned to weld from his Daddy Frank when he was 9, and he worked with his dad in the Lacy’s Welding Shop until it closed. Wayne’s favorite story was the time when a man came into the shop and asked Wayne where his daddy was. Wayne answered, “He is on a job and won’t be back until later.” The man said, “That won’t do. You can fix it for me, your Dad taught you to weld.” Wayne answered “yes sir” and did. It was his first job.
Wayne accepted Christ as his Savior as a 10-year-old and was baptized soon afterward. While Wayne was growing up he was active in Boy Scouts with Scout Master, Tom Embelton, active in school activities, church activities, the church youth group, and he loved being an SHS Longhorn.
After graduating from Springfield High School, Wayne earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Panhandle State University. Wayne married the love of his life, Verva Ann Flaming on June 29, 1958.
Wayne taught 24 years in the Springfield School District, Walsh School District, and Lamar Community College. He began his teaching career as a high school Special Education Life Training teacher. He later taught auto mechanics, and he retired as a welding teacher which was his passion. He is very proud of his students and the successes they have demonstrated throughout the years. He also enjoyed driving the children to school and the SHS athletes to their events. He was a true fan!
Wayne was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Springfield, CO where he served in a wide variety of positions including Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Training Union Superintendent, and Sunday School Superintendent.
Wayne’s favorite pastimes included cheering for the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies, hunting, fishing, camping, and attending his children and grand children’s activities. He loved them deeply.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Alice Lacy, his step-mother Laura Lacy, brothers Harold, Walter, and Ronald Lacy, a son-in-law Tom Shumate, and a granddaughter Cassandra Shumate.
