Devona M McArthur passed away on February 24, 2020, at the SECHD Long Term Care Center in Springfield, CO.
Devona Mae Greenlee was born to Herb and Oma Greenlee on August 30, 1929, halfway between Two Buttes and Vilas at the home of her Grandmother, Rachael Alfrey, who also delivered her. Rachael was a midwife to many families in the area.
Devona Started school at Mountain View and finished her first-grade year in Vilas with Miss Boyd.
When Devona’s mother remarried they moved west of Campo. She thought they had moved to the end of the earth. She was heartbroken at the thought of leaving the “city” life of Vilas. She said hard work and a new baby sister eased life in the country. She loved her sister Alice Fay and helped care for her. The saddest day of Devona’s life was when Alice passed away at the age of six.
Devona married John Jacob Casper May 26, 1944, in Boise City, OK. To this union, there were four children: Joe Bob, Don, Viola, and Azada.
When Devona got married her teacher Mrs. Frank Smith gave her a city lot in Campo for her wedding present! Mrs. Smith knew Devona had a difficult time in school but told her she was a hard worker and with her determination, she was going to make it just fine in life. What a great teacher!
Devona married John P. McArthur on August 17, 1979, at their new house on the hill. John P. and Devona enjoyed having Annie and Bob Dodge out for dinner, loved traveling to see Alma in Texas and Margaret in Durango. Most of all they loved going dancing at the VFW. Devona wants to dance with the cowboy she loved, one more time.
Devona worked at the Springfield Post Office for many years. She earned the right to wear the “United States Postal Service Save Driver” belt buckle as a result of driving 10 yrs. without a preventable accident.
In her retirement from the Post office, she enjoyed garage sales, going to Guyman to do her couponing, giving goodie bags, enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and traveling to Taos and Durango to look for more turquoise.
Survivors include two sons Joe Bob of Springfield, CO, Don of Tucson, AZ, two daughters, Viola of Guymon, OK and Azada of LaVeta, CO, stepdaughter Alma McArthur, Grandchildren Kirby Jenkins, Clayton Jenkins, Sharla Lane and Matt King.
