Darwin Brent Hansen, age 69, of Springfield Colorado, died April 19, 2022, at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado after a brief battle following a hemorrhagic stroke.

Darwin was born on August 12, 1952, in Lamar, Colorado, he was the son of the late Jared (better known as Jerry) and Pauline Kinzie Hansen.

Darwin attended Springfield High School graduating in the Class of 1971. Following graduation, he attended and graduated from Denver Automotive and Diesel.

In March of 1977, he met Donell, and they wed on February 10, 1979, going on to have two children, Calandra and Jared.

Darwin has been employed so many places it is hard to name them all. He has worked for The CO-OP, Ed Melrose, Shamrock, Turks, Holcomb Electric, City of Springfield, as well as Spark’s Auction Company.

Darwin was always willing to help anyone with whatever they might need done. He was known for helping around his community, moving and working cattle for anyone and everyone, assisting with Kid’s Fishing Day, serving at Junior Livestock sales, aiding the Baca County 4-H and Springfield FFA as well as everything else that involved kids. Darwin also was involved with the Sheriff’s Posse, Springfield Police Department Reserves, and the Fire Department.

Darwin was a member of Jaycee’s, Pheasants Forever, National Rifle Association (NRA), Pritchett and Plains Trap Leagues, Arkansas River Power Authority (ARPA), Colorado Association of Municipal Association (CAMU). During his younger days he was a member of the Baca County 4-H, Springfield FFA, and Boy Scouts.

Darwin was recognized on multiple occasions. Some of his largest recognitions being in 1986 he was presented the “7 Hats Award” by ARPA, in 2000 he was given the “Tom Payor Award” also by ARPA, in 2016 he was granted the “Sheepherder” award by CAMU, then 2020 he received the  4-H family of the year.

Darwin retired from the City of Springfield in 2015 after spending 35 years there. After retiring, Darwin spent a few months in the retired state before getting too bored and finding other jobs to keep him busy. During this time, he found himself working for The Division of Wildlife and Chenoweth Construction. If he was in town, he could be found helping out numerous farmers and ranchers in the area when he wasn’t working. If he was not in town, Darwin was likely to be found visiting family, mostly his kids and grandkids.

Darwin was a fun, generous, giving, handy, hardheaded, hardworking, involved, loving, mischievous, ornery, outgoing, a sore loser, volunteering person that was very stuck in his ways about everything. He was dedicated to his family and friends most of all and extremely proud of his grandkids and loved to support them. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting sports, demolition derby, children, volunteering, and especially his dog, Max.

Darwin was preceded in death by his parents Jerry and Pauline Hansen, sister Marylin Lasley, and great-niece Maelin Lasley all of Springfield Colorado.
