On the morning of December 11, 2018, while surrounded by her loving daughters, Edwina and Marilyn, and, her loving son, Jack, angels came to lead Beulah Mae (Moore) Owens Home to sing in God’s Heavenly choir.
Beulah was born to Grover C. and Ota Mae (Lambert) Moore, on August 26, 1929, in Bald Hill, Oklahoma. She and her parents, along with brother, Edwin, and her uncle, Albert, would move to Baca County, Colorado, when she was only six months old for her father to pursue farming. Shortly after their move to Baca County, hard times fell on the country. During this time, she would experience the Great Depression and the “Dust Bowl Days” which gripped Baca County for several years. She would tell stories of how they survived the endless dust storms and how she would see the dust “rolling in” on the horizon. Beulah truly was a member of the “The Greatest Generation”.
On May 7, 1950, Beulah and Manuel Lee “Ted” Owens, were married at the Methodist Church in Springfield, Colorado. To this union, nine children were born; Etta Leanell, Norman Don, Edwina Elaine, Jack Allen, Dale Eugene, Stanley Ray, Marilyn Eileen, John Kelly, and Arlene Renee. Beulah and Ted would make their home in Campo, Colorado, where they raised their nine children. In May of 1980, Beulah was left to finish raising her two youngest children alone when Ted passed away suddenly. She was a devoted mother and her children were the center of her life.
She also had a passion for cleaning, doing laundry and hanging clothes on the line, but most of all, ironing, priding herself with the perfect crease on a pair of jeans. Anyone who had the pleasure of enjoying Beulah’s chocolate cake and fried chicken would probably say it was the best.
In 1983, she relocated to Springfield, Colorado, remaining in her beloved Baca County. Soon, she would find herself raising another child, her grandson, Christopher Keith Owens. She loved and cared for him and raised him just as she had her own children. She would reside in Springfield until 2016 when failing health would take her to be closer to daughter, Edwina Dukes, in Pueblo, Colorado.
Beulah never met a stranger and loved to reminisce about her lifetime of memories in Baca County, a place very dear to her heart. You could find her visiting with numerous people during the Baca County Fair, taking in the parade and enjoying the barbecue. Most of all, she loved her family and cherished every moment she spent with each one of them. Her family included her dogs, who always held a special part of her heart and had from an early age. It saddened her to have to leave them behind when she moved to Pueblo, but her son, Kelly, made sure to take them for frequent visits, which brightened her day.
In August of 2014, for her 85 th birthday, Beulah being a Citizen of the Cherokee Nation, received a great honor when Chief Bill John Baker of the Cherokee Nation presented her with the ‘Cherokee Nation One Fire’ blanket during the Cherokee National Holiday and sang “Happy Birthday” to her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; parents, Grover and Ota Moore; uncle, Albert Moore; brother, Edwin Moore; daughter, Leanell Tudor; and son, Norman Owens.
Left to mourn her passing are her children; daughters, Edwina Dukes (Chris) of Pueblo West, Colorado; Marilyn Hendricks (Craig) of Springfield, Colorado; and Arlene Hotchkin (Kris) of Burden, Kansas; sons, Jack Owens of Pueblo West, Colorado, Dale Owens (Rob Doster) of Centennial, Colorado, Stanley Owens (Darlene) of Midland, Texas; Kelly Owens (Cheryl) of Lamar, Colorado; and daughter-in-law, Sherry Owens of Springfield, Colorado. She also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren who will always cherish their “Nanny”. Her beloved dogs, Evie and Hazie, are also left to mourn her passing.
