Barbara Jane Grant was born August 3, 1925, in Liberal, Kansas to Raymond and Alice (Arbuthnot) Turner. At an early age, she moved to Baca County where she attended public school and graduated from Springfield High School in 1943. She married Lawrence H. Grant November 26, 1943, in Boise City, Oklahoma. During WW II, she followed Lawrence through his time while serving in the Air Force. After returning to Baca County, she supported Lawrence on the farm, as well as working in town at various businesses.
Mom loved music and was an avid fan of Tennessee Ernie Ford, the Oak Ridge Boys, and the Gatlin Brothers. She was known to sit down at the piano and pound out “The Bells of Saint Mary” or any hymn by ear. I’m sure she will be welcome above in the choir of angels!
Mom was an amazing seamstress, having made all the girls clothes, and when they were old enough she taught them how to make their own. At fair time, she made all of us matching western shirts complete with pearl snaps! She was a wonderful cook. She was known for her homemade divinity each year for teachers Christmas gifts. Later in her life, she developed a love for quilting.
Barbara was active in whatever event her children and grandchildren were in. She, (followed with Lawrence) chaperoned everything from band trips, class fundraisers to class plays and proms and homecoming chili suppers. She worked many events supporting the Springfield Longhorns, little league, cub scouts and followed the Denver Broncos.
Mom accepted Christ at an early age, taught Sunday School and sang in many church choirs. There is not a bigger believer in Christ than Mom and she was ready to go when she was called.
She was the mother of six children: Laura Jane, Michael Lawrence, Patty Jeanne, Max Harold, Penny Janeen and James William.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Lawrence; her parents; infant daughter, Laura Jane; and grandson, Jeffrey Don (JD); brothers Harry Turner and J.W. Davis, Jr, and sister, Darlene Negrete.
She is survived by her children: Mike and Colleen Grant of Chehalis, WA; Patty Suber of Savannah, GA; Max Grant of Springfield, CO; Penny Strong of Scottsbluff, NE; Bill and Darla Grant from Avondale, CO. Grandchildren: Heather, Travis, Jennifer, Frank IV, Robert, Dan, Josh, Sarah, and Dustin; Great Grandchildren: Dwyte, Alice, Frank V, Caitlin, Cade, Athan and Zayden. She is also survived by her sister, Nita Scott; and numerous other relatives and friends.
So many memories, not enough room to mention them all. Godspeed Mom, we love you.
