Gene spent all of his school years in the Pritchett School in Pritchett, Colorado. After high school he went one year to Colorado State at Ft. Collins, Colorado. He returned home and engaged in farming, from cutting broomcorn to driving a tractor. Baca County was known than as the Broomcorn Capital of the world. He also worked some with his brother George.
Gene loved all sports. He spent his school years participatong in all the sports that the school had to offer basketball, baseball and track. Gene enjoyed going to the sport events watching and cheering for his favorite team the Pritchett Priates. A few years ago, the Pritchett school gave Gene a certificate honoring him as the schools best supporter.
He loved music; Gene was the church song leader at the Pritchett Chruch of God for 60 years. Gene taught himself to play the harmonica and the piano. Gene sang many, many solos in church as well as other places.
Gene enjoyed walking, and walked whenever possible he seemed to have inherited this from his father. Ward walked from one mile west of Pritchett to Springfield when he was 76 years old. When asked "Why," his comment was, "Just to see if I could do it."
Elsie, one of Gene's sisters sat with him in the grandstand at a Springfield football game a few months ago. Gene told her that a few days before coming to the game he lay in bed and prayed all night. He wanted to be able to get up on his feet and walk and go to the game. His feet were giving him some trouble. He said the next morning he was able to get up on his feet. Gene had a lot of faith.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents Ward and Mamie Brown, an older brother, Geroge Raymond Brown, and two brothers-in-law, Ted Locke and James Hargis. Gene was a quiet man. Even so, if asked a question, he would give a thoughtful answer. If he was asked, to sum up his own life, he might answer, "I did it may way."
