John R. Hicks was born March 12, 1923 to John Monroe & Allie Mae Franks in Wetumpka, OK. He died August 26, 2010 at his home at the age of 87 years. He was the 5th of 12 children. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1944-1946, John trained and served at N.Y.S; U.S.N.H Farragut, Idaho; S.C.T.C Terminal Island, California; U.S.N.B. N.S.D. Clearfield, Utah. He served on the U.S.S Allendale. He received the WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 star, and the Philippine Liberation Medal. He married Margie Lowe on June 1, 1946 at Raton, New Mexico. To this union four children were born Lowell, Karla, Loran, and Leslie. John & Margie farmed in the Edler, CO. area until June of 1968 when they moved to Springfield. He was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, and great grandpa. John was preceeded in death by his parents, 10 brothers and sisters and 1 granddaughter, Jennifer Alfrey Collins. He leaves his wife Margie of Springfield, CO. Daughter Karla & Wyneal Alfrey of South Fork, CO., sons: Lowell & Linda Hicks of South Fork, CO., Loran & Julie Hicks of Canon City, CO., Leslie & Chris Hicks of Livingston, MT. Also 1 sister, Velma & Bill Stewart of Yuma, AZ., 1 brother-in-law; Roy & Mary Lowe of Clovis, NM. 2 sister-in-laws Myrtle Sullivan of Cortez, CO. and Emily Hicks of Clarksville, TN., 1 half sister; Darlene Driskell of Ada, OK., 4 grandsons, 4 granddaughters, 1 step-granddaughter, 14 great grandchildren, 5 step great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
