At Juniper Village in Lamar, Colorado, Baca County, Colorado resident, Norman Don Owens, went to be with the Lord, on December 9, 2009 with brothers, Jack and Kelly at his side.
Norman was the second child born to Manuel Lee "Ted" Owens and Beulah Mae (Moore) Owens of Campo, Colorado, joining the family on November 9, 1953 in Lamar, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his father; grandmother, Ota Moore, grandfather, Grover Moore, and his favorite pet, Tweeter, who was his shadow and always by his side.
On July 2, 1976, Norman was joined in marriage to Sherry Lynn Kelsey in Springfield, Colorado. They made their first home in Boise City, Oklahoma where Norman was employed as a carpenter. In 1978, they moved to Sherry's family farm north of Springfield, Colorado, where Norman helped Sherry's parents, Bill and Naomi Kelsey. In 1987, the couple moved to Moscow, Kansas, where they farmed for brothers, J.W. and Dell Cullison. Missing his Baca County roots, the couple moved back to Springfield in 2003 where Norman was employed for a short time for Bob Woods until his failing health caused him to retire.
At the young age of 11 years, Norman started driving his first tractor for Mr. Leonard Schroeder north of Campo, Colorado. He went on his first harvest at the age of 16 with his younger sister, Edwina, with Cline and Lucy Kester, also, of Campo, Colorado.
Norman enjoyed working with his hands and was good at everything he did, especially woodworking and carpentry. He spent endless hours on his gardening and always had enough crop for the entire community. Norman enjoyed hunting, both small and big game, especially hunting pheasant in Southwest Kansas with his brother, Stanley, and numerous friends. When not hunting, you would find him with his fishing pole and he could sit for hours trying to get the big one. In the summer, Norman was always at his barbecue grill cooking for a crowd. There was always enough leftovers for days.
When reminiscing about their childhood, his brothers and sisters remember him as your typical big brother. If there was orneriness around, you could be certain Norman was at the beginning of it. This continued on into his adulthood as you could find him starting water fights at many family get togethers with his neices and nephews.
Survivors include, wife, Sherry, of the home, their "kids" Sugar, Taco, Prissy, Onry, Sassy and Chunky. He is also survived by his mother, Beulah Owens of Springfield, Colorado; sisters, Leanell (Ben) Tudor of Arkansas City, Kansas, Edwina (Chris) Dukes of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Marilyn (Craig) Hendricks of Cascade, Colorado, and Arlene Owens of Burden, Kansas; brothers, Jack Owens of Scottsdale, Arizona, Dale Owens of Centenniel, Colorado, Stanley (Darlene) Owens of Trinidad, Colorado, and Kelly (Cheryl) Owens of Lamar, Colorado.
