Paul Wayne Brandenburg passed away on Friday, July 15, 2016 at the age of 89 after a long battle with emphysema, at his home in Burlington, Colorado. He was the first-born son of Artimus (Art) Brandenburg and Inez Robbins born on May 7, 1927 in Springfield, Colorado. To this union three other sons were born – Harold, Leonard and Lester (all deceased). Paul was united in marriage in 1947 to Betty Jo Cochran and to this union one son, Douglas Wayne Brandenburg (Tallman), was born. In March 1953 Paul was married to Marian Brown, Furlong (Cronic) for over 62 years until her death in Dec, 2015. Paul became the father of Marian’s children Robert (Bob) Brown and Alyce Furlong (Hudnell). In addition, a child was born from this union that died in infancy. Paul grew up in Springfield, Colorado. He was active in sports playing both football and basketball in high school. In his early years he had various jobs including milking cows and making breakfast every morning for the home hospital his mother ran. He also worked on many farms and ranches in Baca County into his early 20’s. Paul liked women, alcohol, dancing and fighting (in that order). He joined the Navy in 1945 and served in WWII. He was recalled in 1950 during the Korean War. In 1952 Paul moved to Marian’s home town of Pueblo and began working for the Pueblo steel mill (CF & I). He became one of the most talented and respected crane operators in the company. In 1965 he was offered a job with IBM and moved to Longmont and became a plant production manager. He was a very task-oriented and dedicated employee who was respected for his managerial skills. He worked at IBM until he retired in 1987 at the age of 60. He quit smoking and became an avid walker for the next 29 years. Paul and Marian spent the first 10 years of retirement traveling in a 5th wheel all over the Western US. They sold the small family cabin in Alpine, CO in 1998 and built a new home nearby where they lived for 10 years. In 2010 due to health reasons they moved to Burlington to be near their daughter Alyce and her husband Jerry Hudnell. When his health did not allow him to walk anymore the residents of Burlington noticed the absence of a strong, white-haired man with an oxygen bottle roaming the streets of town. Paul loved fishing, hunting, hiking and especially playing poker with his Buena Vista VFW buddies. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marian, brothers; Harold, Leonard and Lester, grandson, Shawn Martin and great-grandson Treyan Brown. He is survived by son, Doug Tallman (Mary Jo) of Brandon, CO, step-son Robert Brown of Longmont, CO, step-daughter, Alyce Hudnell (Jerry) of Burlington, CO, 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren (one more next month) and 2 great-great-grandsons and many nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be held at Springfield cemetery July 20th at 10:30 am. A memorial for Paul and his late wife Marion will be held on September 3rd in Alpine, CO. Paul will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He will especially be missed by Alyce, Jerry, Janine, Jan, Michael, Rick, Chris, Rae and Sara. He was a family treasure for all of us. .
