Florence Verdeen (Combs) Mason was born on June 25, 1927, at Huntington Park. California. She was the third child of Arcu Henry and Gladys Combs arriving shortly after her twin brother Lawrence. She went to be with our Lord on the wings of a song on June 14, 2016, with her family by her side.
Her early years were spent around the Pritchett, CO community and she received her High School Diploma from the American School of Chicago, IL on April 9, 1954.
Florence was joined in marriage to Ora Columbus Mason on November 28, 1944, in Boise City, OK while Ora was on leave from the Navy. Ora and Florence started their life together on a farm southeast of Pritchett CO.
To this loving union of over forty-nine years the Lord blessed them with seven children: Burrell Leon, Sheila Ann, Benny Ray, Teresa Sue, Kathryn Marcene, Rochelle Dawn, and Marian Ruth.
When Ora and Florence moved their family to the Springfield area, Florence, in addition to being a homemaker and Mother, was a seamstress for area families and also worked at Duckwalls. She learned to sew in 4-H as a young girl and used those skills throughout her life. She was very proud of the shirt she made for Burrell on his first day of school and seeing him wave at her from the back of the bus. She sewed many things for her family over the years, including wedding dresses for four of her five daughters. Made dolls for all her granddaughters, small pillows with silk covering for anyone that needed them, and various other things.
In 1965, with five children at home, she attended Cosmetology school in Lamar CO and graduated in May 1966. Not long after her loving husband built her a Beauty Shop attached to their home. Florence provided beauty and hair services for approximately twenty-three years to her patrons. Florence loved her work and through it, she made many special friends.
Florence was a member of the Springfield VFW Women's Auxiliary Post 4001. She was faithful in her support of Ora in his efforts of paying tribute to the Veterans by placing flags on their graves each Memorial Day. After the flags were placed, Florence often prepared breakfast for Ora and his recruits which included his children, grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Florence gave her life to the Lord at an early age and served him in many ways over the years in her local Church of God. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, taught Bible School, and was active in the Women's group of the Church of God. As the years went by, she had a strong card ministry by sending cards of encouragement, sympathy, birthday and anniversary greetings. Her grandchildren held this tradition dear.
One of her true joys in her life was cooking for those she loved. For her family, her specialties were noodles, divinity, peanut brittle, fudge, cinnamon rolls, and angel food cake.
She took up painting with her older sister Elsie Lee. She honored each of her children with a painting of their choice. She preferred to paint only when she was with her sister.
She loved pretty things, flowers, finger nails, jewelry, hair, shoes, clothes, and noticed those things in everyone around her.
She was an example through her faith in God, her courage and strength to live life to the fullest and be brave and try new things no matter her age. We all witnessed her never ending faith and she never complained no matter what came her way.
The last couple of months were a true testament to her life, her faith, and her ability to touch others. Florence's life and her passing were a witness to all who knew and loved her.
She was welcomed to her heavenly home by her husband, Ora C Mason, son Benny Ray, parents, Arcu & Gladys Combs, Daughter-in-law, Colleen Mason, Son-in-law, John Emick, and Granddaughter Becky (Ingle) Shepherd, and other beloved family and friends.
She was survived by her six children: Burrell Mason, Sheila
Emick, and Kathryn (Vernon) Close of Springfield, CO; Teresa (Bill) Pattie, of Rocky Ford, CO; Rochelle (Graeme) Anderson, of Maidenwell, Queensland Australia, and Marian (Ruben) Martinez of Colorado Springs, CO. 13 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sister, Dollie Pickerel, and brothers Wesley (Colleen) Combs, and Melvin (Carol) Combs all of Pueblo, CO; Sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Millican, of Fort Collins, CO and Brother-in-law Curtis (Verna Fae) Mason of Guymon, OK.
