He married Lucile Marshall in 1944 and they had three children, Charlotte, Kathie and Scott. He had 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was involved in ranching, farming and the Springfield Abstract & Title business.
Herb contributed a great deal to the community serving as choir director for over 50 years, Scout Master for the Boy Scouts , 29 years as a basketball referee, serving on the school board, cooking BBQ at the County Fair as well as working hard to build the Southeast Colorado Hospital, among other civic activities.
Herb loved hunting, fishing, the great outdoors in Baca County, music and singing whether as a soloist or with duets, quartets, or larger chorales.
Herb and Lucille moved to a retirement community in Lakewood, CO, shortly before his death but Baca County was his home.
Memorial services were held at the Lakewood Meridian in Lakewood, CO, followed by a service in Springfield on the 18th of January.
His ashes will be spread at Scout’s Cave east of Springfield where he played in his youth, the finish line at the Springfield high school track where he competed and watched many a local athlete complete a race, some of his favorite spots in Baca County and the Springfield Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions be given to the Springfield United Methodist Church or to the Southeast Colorado Hospital either directly or by way of the funeral home.
