Anna Marie Standlea was born to Floyd Porter and Nellie McCune Porter on May 23, 1926 in Springfield, CO and passed away November 28, 2015 at the age of 89 in Springfield CO. This is her memoir...
I, Anna Marie Standlea was born to Floyd and Nellie Porter in Springfield, CO, May 23, 1926. I was one of 8 children in this family. My brothers Wesley and Jessie died when they were living on the homestead between Springfield and Pritchett. My dad then moved his family to Springfield. I went to school in Springfield till my teen years then went to live in North Hollywood California with Jean Meltabarger and her mother. I didn’t finish school there because I decided to help in the war effort, by helping to make P-38 fighter planes at Lockheed. After the war was over I came home for a visit and met Carl Standlea. He had been away fighting the war for 4 years. He was on the front line and made 3 beach heads during his time in the military. We got married and had 4 children here in Springfield while he worked on the railroad. He then decided to go look for a better paying job in Pueblo, CO. He got a job at the CFI Steel Mill where he worked until he retired. I moved back to Springfield in 1958 and finished raising my children in the “Old House” of Floyd Porters on the north end of town. I was a cook at a lot of different places. I started at the L & L Café and ended up managing the Hill Top Café. I decided to move to Tulsa, Oklahoma to be near my son Carl, Daughter Gracie, and Sister Mable. I found Tulsa to be too hot for my liking, so I moved to the mountains and worked for my brother Cecil who had a Café and Bakery called “Red Buffalo” in Frisco, CO. We delivered bakery items to Vail, Winter park, and various other ski resorts. Cecil had sold the “Red Buffalo” in Frisco and bought the 6&40 in Idaho Springs so we moved there for a time, still enjoying the cool mountain atmosphere. I was in the mountains for about 2 years with my brother Cecil, but I ended up getting homesick for my kids and went back to Tulsa. Thankfully they had air-conditioning by that time. I worked in a nursing home for 8 years until I retired to a cabin in Barnsdall OK on my Son Carl’s land outside of Tulsa. I don’t remember exactly how long I was there, but about 11 years. I decided I was too old for the woods, so I came back home to Springfield. I lived next to my daughter Edith who lives on the old home place. It was good to be home, see all my old friends and acquaintances and make new friends. Reckon that’s about it. I’ve just washed dishes and cooked most all my life for a living… I take that back! I was an “Executive Chef”! HA!
Anna was in the Springfield LTC for about 4 years where she was looked after and she enjoyed the fun things they did there, until she went her last mile home.
