Dorothy “Jewell” Carter was born in Duke Oklahoma on April 8, 1924 to Ivan “Jewell” Dean and Ola “Jewell” Comer.  She passed on April 2, 2014 at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo Colorado at the age of 89.   At the age of four “Jewell” and her family (her parents, siblings Lloyd, Era, Art, Margie) moved from Duke Ok to Kim Colorado in 1928.  After moving to Kim, the family welcomed additions Juanita, Leta Vee, Farris, Eileen, Edith and Gerald.  Jewell attended school in the Kim area and left school at the age of 17 to help care for family. She also worked as a local farmer’s hand harvesting various crops.  Little did she know that while working as a teenager she would meet her daughter’s future in-laws.   Around 1940 Jewell and her siblings knew a man who came to town on horseback followed by his greyhound dogs. They called him Hound Dog man.  Two years later she married this man whose name was Walter Mellott.    Their first home was established 6 miles southwest of Kim, incidentally this home was only 1 ½ miles from Freddie and Ruby Dunsworth.  In August 1947, Jewell and Walter were blessed with a baby girl, Wanda Jean.    During Jewell’s and Walter’s marriage, they worked for other farmers while keeping up with their own farm. They raised all different types of farm animals.  From 1942 to 1956, Jewell worked part time as a type setter for the Kim County Record.   In 1954 she went to work for the Kim School District as a cook so that she could by a refrigerator. She was able to purchase the refrigerator with her 1st paycheck from Kim School and she continued to work at the school for another 36 years retiring in 1990.   This refrigerator is still in use in her home in Kim.   Two rules while going thru the lunch line, if you said the certain words or wore a cap in line, you had to go to the end.    In 1965, during her years at the school she welcomed son-in-law Leroy Dunsworth.   Within the next 10 years grandchildren Dorothy, Richard, Nancy and Melinda joined the family.  Jewell lost her husband Walter in June 1972 after 30 years of marriage.  In 1977 Jewell married Keith Carter.  With the help of family, they installed indoor electricity in 1979, and in 1984 they installed indoor plumbing.   After her retirement, Jewell and Keith traveled extensively across most of the United States.  For over 20 years, Jewell and Keith were involved with the VFW.  Jewell served as president of the VFW Woman’s Auxiliary for several years.  Between 1994 and 2007, Jewell added 3 grandson in laws, granddaughter in law and 6 great grandchildren.   Jewell is predeceased by her parents, both husbands Walter and Keith; siblings Lloyd, Art, Gerald, Era, and Eileen.  She is survived by daughter Wanda (Leroy) Dunsworth of Springfield; grandchildren Dorothy (Russ) Burke of Springfield; Richard (Holly) Dunsworth, their children Nicolas, Matthew, and Emma of Clarksville, Arkansas; Nancy (Steve) Nichols, their child Stevi of Pueblo; Melinda (Rob) Barnes, their children Gavin and Carter of Springfield.  She is also survived by siblings Farris (Sandy) Dean of California; Juanita Fell and Margie Albers of Goodland Kansas; Leta Vee Best of Des Moines, Iowa; and Edith (Jack) Ashworth of Union Kentucky and numerous nieces and nephews.  Funeral Services were held at the Kim School Gymnasium in Kim CO on Monday April 7th, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. with Pastor Ervin Maltbie officiating.  Interment was held at the Kim Cemetery.   In lieu of flowers the family has request that donations be given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation either through the foundations website WWW.JDRF.ORG or through Maltbie Funeral Services.
