Baca County resident Lloyd Dean passed away Monday February 3rd 2014 at the age of 92. Funeral services will be held at the Springfield Assembly of God Church 400 church St. Monday February 10th at 10:00 A.M. Community visitation and viewing will be held Saturday February 8th from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Maltbie Funeral Services. Lloyd was born on October 5, 1921 in Duke Oklahoma and passed away on February 3, 2014 at Southeast Colorado Hospital in Springfield CO. When Lloyd was 7 years old he and his family moved from Oklahoma, to Kim Colorado. He attended school in Kim for a short time. When finances became difficult for the family he became employed by nearby farmers. During that time he also worked on the Caddo Dam. Lloyd enlisted into the Navy on October 7, 1942, and served as a baker for the third class division on the USS Kern at Pearl Harbor. Lloyd received an honorable discharge on November 12, 1945. Lloyd traveled to Lamar Colorado where he met and married Lillie Anderson in April of 1946. They moved to Wichita Kansas, where he was employed as a salesman at a furniture store. He also worked as a janitor in the local schools. In 1952 they became the parents of a tiny baby girl whom they named Shirley. In Lloyd’s spare time he was an avid musician. He loved to play the harmonica, banjo, mandolin, and guitar. He wrote Christian choruses which he loved to sing. In 2002 Lloyd, Lillie, and Shirley moved to Springfield. In 2005 Lillie went to her heavenly home. In 2013 Lloyd became a resident of the Long Term Care Center in Springfield. While he was there he made many new friends and loved to visit when he could. He loved to tell stories from the olden days about him and his siblings growing up on the farm. He also loved the nurses at the LTC. His favorite quote was “Oh here comes my favorite nurse” no matter who it was. Lloyd joined Lillie on February 3, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents Ivan J. and Ola J. Dean, wife Lillie, Brothers Arthur and Gerald and sisters Era Hancock, and Eileen Krayca. Survivors include daughter Shirley of Springfield, Sisters Jewell Carter of Springfield, Margie Albers of Goodland KS, Juanita Fell of Goodland KS, Leeta V Best of Des Moines Iowa, Edith (Jack) Ashworth of Union KY, Brothers Farris (Sandy) Dean of Atascadero CA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Lloyd will be dearly missed by all that knew him…
