Delma Arlene (Bryan) Winegarner was born May 10, 1926 and departed this life on October 1, 2013 at the Southeast Colorado Hospital “End of Life Care” in Springfield, Colorado.
Delma was the fisrt child of Ray and Esther (Johnston) Bryan. She lived on a farm northeast of Campo with her parents, three brothers, Dorman, Dale and DeNain, and a sister, Dena.
She received most of her elementary education from the little country school, Eagle Center. She began attending Campo School in the seventh grade. Delma graduated from the Campo High School in 1944. After she graduated from the high school, she attended Panhandle State University at Goodwell, Oklahoma and received her BA Degree in 1948. She taught school in Boise City, Oklahoma, the country school at Sandy Soil, and Pritchett, Colorado before she was married.
On August 6, 1950 she married Herbert Winegarner in the beautiful country home of Oze and Pearl Dishman by Reverend Arthur Frary. To this union, five sons were born: Norlan, Arlan, Gailan, Verlan, and Rolan.
Delma received her Master’s Degree in 1961 from Western State University in Gunnison, Colorado. After her marriage to Herbert they taught in Vilas, Holyoke, and Campo, Colorado.
She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior on November 8, 1964 and joined the Springfield United Methodist Church where she attended regularly for 63 years. She served on many church committees during that time and sang in the choir for ten years.
Delma retired from the Campo School District RE-6 in 1985. Since retirement, she has traveled from the east coast to the west coast and from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. She liked to fish, camp, dance, read books, attend concerts, play the piano, play dominoes and rummy. She served on the hospice board for many years.
Delma received the UMW Special Mission Recognition Award for 2012. The award is given each year in recognition for service to the church and the community.
Delma was also honored for teaching high school English and business classes at the 2013 Campo All School Alumni Banquet. She sponsored the classes of 1964, 1967, 1971, 1976, 1981, and 1984. She had a tremendous impact on the lives of her students and was an inspiration to all who knew her.
The Campo Alumni Association presented a special gift to her and her husband for their many years of service to their school and community. The gift was a beautiful sculpture made by Campo’s prominent artist, Shalah Perkins.
Delma was preceded in death by her Father Ray, Mother Esther, brothers Dorman, Dale and De Nain, and Sister Dena, her Father and Mother- in- law Virgil and Florence Winegarner, and brothers-in-law Howard Winegarner and Cecil Wingarner.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Herbert L. Winegarner, sons Norlan and wife Linda, Arlan and wife Peggy, Gailan and wife Sheryl, Verlan and wife Brenda, Rolan and Wife Deloris and one Aunt Alice Heiney. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Irene Winegarner, Julia Winegarner, and Opal Moffett. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Delma was a devoted wife and helpmate to Herbert, a caring and loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and beloved aunt.
