Joy's parents moved to Baca County southwest of Campo in 1916 from Louisville, TX in a covered wagon, where they homesteaded in a place they call Nowlinsville. They had a general store, post office, school, and sometimes a church in the dugout. Settlers came from all around to gather for picnics, church, and school. Then later because of the lack of shade trees for the long hot days they moved the activities to the Brookhart Ranch. Joy's mother was appointed by Post Master General Albert S. Burleson as post mistress of Nowlinsville in 1916. The post office was moved to Campo, Co in later years.
Joy was 6 years old when her mother died. She went to live with her sister Lura Reeves and family in Arkansas for a year. She came back to Colorado at the age of 8 years old and was welcomed into the home of Lonnie and Lillian Collings to live southwest of Campo until she graduated from Campo school in 1942. She also attended Springfield, Friendship, and Bluemound schools.
After graduation from Campo High School, Joy went to California to live with her brother Lee Nowlin and family. She then worked at Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank California before enlisting in the US Navy (Waves) in 1944. On November of 1944 Joy, along with three thousand other enlisted Waves, left LA, California on the train to New York City for training at Hunter College for 6 weeks. She then was assigned to the Department of Personnel in Washington, DC until she was honorably discharged in 1946. She then returned to Colorado and taught at Murry School southwest of Campo for one year.
On November 27th, 1946 Joy and Carl Hinds were married at the Campo Baptist Church. They lived and farmed with Ernest Hinds on the homestead. Being a wife, homemaker, and mother were her life's happiness. To this union 3 children were born, Ann Kathleen 1949, Jay Dalton 1952, and Mark Gallen 1955.
Preceding her in death were her parents, 2 sisters and 3 brothers, and her foster parents Lonnie and Lillian Collings, as well as her husband Carl in 1979 and her youngest son Mark in 1999.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Kim Smith of Campo, her son Jay Hinds of El Cajon California, and her 6 grandchildren Stacey, Cynthia, Rebecca, Benjamin Smith and Jason and Philip Hinds.
She has 9 great grandchildren and 5 great, great grandchildren, one sister in law Jane (Hinds) Olmon of Aubrey, TX. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.
