Sidney (Sid) Harrison, 92, long-time resident of Springfield, CO, passed away on June 8, 2011. He was born in Scott City, KS on December 12, 1918, the ninth of 11 children born to Charles Homer and Lena May Harrison.
Sid began life on his own lieaving home at age 16, hopping freight trains to Nebraska where he worked in the potato fields, to Evergreen, CO for a time, and on to Elko, Nevada to be a ranch hand. Sid stayed in Nevada about a year before moving to Eugene, OR, where he worked as a lumberjack. At age 23, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Hovey. During that time, he was in the South Pacific where the Hovey participated in the invasion of Guadalcanal and took part in landings on Bougainville. Four months before the Hovey was sunk by a Kamikaze and a torpedo, he was transfered to the USS Sarasota where he saw action in the Philippines. After four years of service, he was honorably discharged on October 13, 1945.
Out of the Navy, Sid became a chef at the Palace Hotel in San Fracisco. Upon the death of his brother Elmer in 1949, he came to Baca County to help with the harvest of Elmer's broomcorn crop. He was so enamored with the life of the broomcorn farmer, he decided to settle here. He raised broomcorn south of Utleyville until 1988 at which time he moved to Springfield.
In 1956, he married Martella (Tillie) Brown Ferril in Clayton, New Mexico. After their retirement, he and Tillie enjoyed traveling with their 5th wheel to Arizona where they spent winters in Benton and Quartzsite. After Tillie's death, Sid became involved with delivering meals for the Meals on Wheels program and loved joining his friends for dinner at the Sinor Center. His favorite past-time were dancing, watching baseball and most of all spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren.
