Obituary of a Colorado Cowboy
His favorite brimmed hat sits alone on a peg, and the last mile of the range has been ridden for Nyle Wilford McVey, 87, who was called to his heavenly home on Saturaday, January 22, 2011. Nyle passed away surrounded by the love of family and friends at the Southeast Colorado Hospital in Springfield, Colorado.
Blessed with three children from a first marriage, Nyle leaves behind two sons, Dan and Larry; and one daughter, Penny; his current wife of 35 years, Fern; and two step sons, Kenneth and James Bonner. Additionally, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren were fortunate to call him "Grandpa". Many close friends will also tip their hats in sorrow at the passing of a fellow hard-working cowboy.
As Nyle travels toward God's Home on the Range, he will join his previously departed family; father, Ellsworth; mother, Edith; brothers, Don, Harold, Lawrence and Clyde; and sister, Dorothy.
Although Nyle spent the majority of his life as a resident of Baca County, he was actually born in Montezuma, Kansas, on June 6, 1923. In 1928, the McVey family traveled to Baca County in a Model-T Ford where they homesteaded at the Munday Rance southwest of Pritchett. Nyle later spent many years farming and ranching 10 miles west of Pritchett. In his early years, Nyle and his brohers were known to display some ornery antics, and what trouble one didn't think of, the others often would. Later, Nyle honorable served his country in the ship's compliment as a mediacal techincian on the U.S.S Hope during World War II. Nyle took great pride in being a veteren for his country and was proud to tell the stroy to his grandchildren several years later. Throughout his life, Nyle displayed a passion for farm life, growing crops, and raising animals.
Now as this cowboy rides the sunset home, in friends' and families' hearts, we know that he will forever roam.
