Graveside funeral service for Baca County resident Mildred “Jane” Savage will be held Monday March 21, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Springfield Cemetery.
Mildred Jane Huckaby Savage was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. She grew up in Springfield during the depression and the dust bowl in the 1930's and survived with many stories to tell about it. She was ten years old when the dust bowl storms rolled into Baca County bringing havoc and death to this area and she remembers hanging wet sheets up over the doors and windows to keep the dust out of their home. Her mother Susie Huckaby and her father, Luther Huckaby owned and operated a used furniture store located on main street. Jane graduated from Springfield High School in 1943.
Jane met her husband, Carleton, (Mike) Savage, here in Springfield. Mike joined the Navy during the war, and served on the U.S.S. Colorado. After being apart, Mike was coming into San Francisco for a short stay when Jane and a friend of hers traveled there by car so she and Mike could get married. Later, Mike would brag and tell the story of how Jane chased him all the way to the pacific coast to get married. He also bragged about how his C.C. buddies used to whine and cry about how he had the best looking girl in town.
She and Mike raised their four girls, and later a son in Pueblo Colorado where Mike worked as a part time farmer and full time electrician and the Steel Mill. Jane worked as a bookkeeper at a local grocery. After they retired, they returned to Springfield and Jane helped her sister Juanita Brooks prepare income taxes for the community.
Jane has been a long time member of the United Methodists church in Pueblo Colorado and participated in the choir there. She attended the Methodist Church here in Springfield after she moved here in 1994.
Jane was born to Robert Luther and Rebecca S Huckaby on June 22, 1925 in LaMesa, Texas and passed away March 14, 2016 at the age of 90 in Springfield CO.
